Dear Parents and Carers,

We are half way through the second half of the Spring term.  The school year is passing by quickly.  We are now in the liturgical season of Lent. We are asked to do three things during Lent.  Firstly, to pray, secondly, to fast and thirdly, to give alms.  For the children we are asking them to show acts of kindness, to be extra respectful and to really consider their actions when playing with others.  When discussing this with your children I would like you to remind them of our Golden Rules.

Juniors

Infants

·         Follow in God’s footsteps and be a positive role model

·         Have respect for other people and their property

·         Walk quietly and sensibly up and down the stairs

·         Honesty, manners and truthfulness are priceless gifts that we can share with everybody

·         Keep your arms, feet and nasty words to yourself

·         We are gentle: We do not  hurt others

·         We are kind and helpful: We do not hurt anybody’s feelings

·         We listen: We don’t interrupt

·         We are honest: We don’t cover up the truth

·         We work hard: We don’t waste our own or others’ time

·         We look after property: We don’t waste or damage things

So that we maintain our high standards of behaviour for learning, our fundamental and non-negotiable classroom expectations are:

  • To be able to teach without interruption
  • To have ‘quiet’ when explaining things
  • To stay in their places if told to
  • To put their hand up and ask politely
  • To look and listen when the teacher is talking
  • To use quiet working voices in the classroom

Please recap these rules and expectations with your children so they can see we are working together.

CAFOD 

The children had a CAFOD assembly where they learnt all about the issues facing Bangladeshi fishermen who no longer can feed their families because there are no fish and there is no money. On Friday 15th March there is a non-uniform day to support CAFOD. This is also the family fast day of Lent. We are asking the children to bring in a donation - £1 would be fabulous. Likewise, on Tuesday 19th March it is St Joseph’s Day – our patron saint. The children can wear non uniform on this day and we will be celebrating the great saint in all sorts of ways during the day.

Some information about St Joseph

Joseph was Jesus’ earthly father.  He is the patron saint of workers and is known as Joseph the Carpenter.  Pope Pius IX declared Joseph to be both the patron and protector of the Catholic Church.  He is regarded as a role model for fathers. Prayers to St Joseph are also said to help unborn children, immigrants, workers, employment, explorers, carpenters and pilgrims.  St Joseph also carries a lily in blossom which is a symbol of purity.

First Holy Communion

The First Holy Communicants will be making their Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday 23rd March.  This will take place at Sacred Heart Church and start at 10.30am.  First Holy Communion will take place for all children on Saturday 22nd June at mid-day. 

Update of Personal Information

Please make sure the information we have for you and the children is correct.  If you change your mobile number you must inform us immediately. This is for the safety of your child/children. Let us know if your child has any allergies or if they are on any medication.  Medication should be kept in date – this is your responsibility as a parent. 

World Book Day  

Our World Book Day was a huge success.  Mrs Kilbey and Mrs McDuff arranged for the children to have some wonderful experiences during World Book Week so a big thank you to them. Thank you to everyone who made it to school in costume. We had some wonderful Roald Dahl creations!

New member of staff

You will notice in the school office we have a new member in our admin team.  Lisa Fowler joined us on Monday.  I am sure our St Joseph’s family will make her warmly welcome.

Dates for your Diary

Friday 15th March – CAFOD DAY: Family Fast Day: non uniform for children and a contribution to CAFOD

Tuesday 19th March: Feast of St Joseph - non uniform for children (no contribution necessary)

Saturday 23rd March: Sacrament of Reconciliation for Children making their First Holy Communion 10.30am at Sacred Heart Church

Break up Friday 5th April at 1pm

Easter Holiday: Monday 8th April and return to school on Tuesday 23rd April

Year 2 SATs will be taken on various days throughout the month of May

Year 6 SATS tests: Begin Monday 13th May

A Lenten Reflection

Have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance? Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or do-over, to “return to God with our whole heart.”

What message do I want to offer others through what I say and do this Lent?
What have my children taught me about entering into the season of Lent?
