Newsletter - 12th October 2017

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends

Time has flown so quickly. We have one more week before half term. Over the last few weeks the children have been learning about so many different things and it has been a pleasure to see them flourish. It has been good to see the Reception classes, Red and Rainbow, settle so well into their routine and it has been gratifying to welcome and getting to know those families new to the school.

We had a fantastic Macmillan coffee morning where we raised £1,000 for such a good cause. Thank you to everybody who donated cakes and prizes. You made the morning so special and such fun. Thank you from all of us at St Joseph’s. On that note, over half term one of our staff, Jane Crawford, is going to ‘Brave the Shave’ in aid of raising money for Macmillan. If there is anyone who would like to donate to the cause please do so at the school office. Also, don’t be surprised if you see Mrs Crawford with no hair!!

Our half term will start on Friday the 19th October. There will be no school on this day. Children will return to school on Monday 29th October. Over this half term we will be having some work done to the main playground toilets. This work will start the week beginning the 15th October and will last 3 weeks. Did you know our school is a Grade 2 listed building and was built by the famous architect Leonard Stokes? Leonard Stokes went on to be one of the most respected Victorian architects and was the President of the Royal Institute of British Architects for 10 years.

School Dinners

We are changing our school dinner provider directly after half term. We have chosen a company called Caterlink to work with us. Watch this space for updates!

Meet the Police

Over half term there are some local events taking place in Brandon Park, Peckham Rye Park and Burgess Park. Please look at the notice boards outside of the Junior School gate or in the Infant playground for more information.

Uniform

Please make sure you name your child’s uniform. Once again we have mounds of lost property. Can you also please ensure your children are wearing school shoes rather than trainers? Trainers and plimsolls are for PE and after school sports clubs only.

Vomiting and Diarrhoea

We have been advised by the NHS that if a child has vomiting and diarrhoea they do not come to school for 48 hours. This can be difficult for families but equally it is difficult for schools. We find that infection spreads and often there may be a number of subsequent children that need to go home for the same reason. As the colder weather arrives and the number of winter bugs increases make sure your children only come to school if they are well enough. For further clarification please go to the web page below:

Parents’ Evenings

These will take place on Wednesday 17th October and Thursday 18th October. Infant classes will display their timetables in the playground from tomorrow. Junior time slips have already been sent out. Please sign up or reply. It is very important that you share in your child’s educational journey.

Flu Vaccinations

These will take place in school on Tuesday 16th October for Reception through to Y5.

If you would like your child to be vaccinated, please return your permission slips as soon as possible (if you haven’t already done so) as without these, your child will not be given the vaccine.

Sports News

Congratulations to St Joseph’s Camberwell Catholic Schools’ Federation for receiving the Southwark Silver Sports Award! Also a big ‘Well Done!’ to the Junior School cross country teams who have performed magnificently this half term with Yr. 6, Yr.4 and Yr.3 winning and Yr. 5 finishing runners-up. In football the Yr. 6 boys’ team finished runners-up in the Southwark tournament whilst the girls went one better, winning their tournament and bringing back the trophy!

Harvest Festival

Donations of packets and tins of food are being collected right now for the Sacred Heart Foodbank and the Manna Day Centre in SE1 who, on a daily basis, prepare nourishing meals for the homeless in our city. We ask that each child donates an item of food (no perishables) for these worthy causes. Thank you all in advance.

Prayer of Reflection

Act of Charity

O my God, I love you with all my heart, with all my soul and with all my strength. Lord increase our love. Help us to love one another. Amen

God is with us in whatever we do.
