Dear Parents and Carers,

The week after next is half term and time has flown by since we started back. Being in two schools is a true privilege and has confirmed to me how well St Joseph’s is doing! There are lots of initiatives going on to support the health and wellbeing as well as the education of our children.

On Thursday I saw our Shake Up club discovering all about healthy snacks! They had to decide what they liked and didn’t like. Amidst the blueberries, pineapple, and raspberries, there was also pomegranate, coconut, mango, cherry tomatoes and red peppers.  It was a feast for the eyes! All those colours and so good for everyone.  No need to reach for the crisps when you just need a snack!

I also received a letter from ‘Fizz Free February’.  Can we try to do this and reduce our fizzy drink and sugar intake? It says that at the moment young people in England consume almost 3 times the recommended amount of sugar. In Southwark, almost one third of primary and secondary school pupils reported having sweets or non-diet fizzy drinks on most days. The daily amount of added sugar a child should have is shown below:

4-6 years

5 sugar cubes

19 grams

7-10 years

6 sugar cubes

24 grams

11+ years

7 sugar cubes

30 grams

The easiest way to cut down the amount of sugar you have in your diet is through simple swaps: change fizzy drinks to water, opt for lower fat milks, and choose sugar-free or no added sugary drinks. According to NHS England 43% of our children are overweight.  This is a scary statistic!

Behaviour and Attendance

We aim for behaviour at St Joseph’s to be impeccable.  This week I have noticed that the way in which some children speak to others and to adults is not as kind or as respectful as it could be. People can be offended and upset by unnecessary comments and this leads to teachers spending valuable time dealing with issues that could easily be avoided.  I would ask you to speak to your children about this.
